Out n'about in Ontario

First and foremost, Happy New Year! I hope everyone has had a better and healthier start than us. Both hubs and I were sick for nearly the entire month of January. Luckily, we had managed to be somewhat back to normal by the time the last weekend rolled around. Our friend Mark, was staying in Ontario for work that Friday so we decided to tag along.

We were able to catch a flight into Buffalo and snag an Uber to Anchor Bar while we waited for Mark to meet us for dinner. For those of you who aren't aware, Anchor Bar is where buffalo wings were created. We even managed to eat at the original location! If in Buffalo, it's definitely a good time.

Once we were full, we loaded up the car and headed towards Niagara Falls (Ontario side) for the night. We were at the Hilton and managed to snag a great view of the falls! For breakfast, we normally try to venture out but this time we decided to eat at the hotel restaurant on the 32nd floor. It was a buffet style but they had an impressive offering and of course, the view left little to be desired.

The next morning we got up early and hit up the casino after breakfast. Once we'd won a bit of cash for the night ahead, we bundled up and walked down towards the falls. Ok, moment of truth here... I was not that excited for this trip. I was just getting over what I can only assume was the flu and was still exhausted. Not only that, we were headed to Canada in the middle of winter. That being said, the falls made it worth it. Sure it was cold, but mother nature certainly didn't hold back on this one. The views were stunning and the falls are incredible. I would definitely come back again and stay at Niagara on the Lake (which is a small town about 40 minutes from the falls) and try out some of the wineries.

We stayed and walked around near the falls for about an hour. After that, we hopped into the car for our next stop, Toronto! We had all been to Toronto but none had really explored so we were excited to see the city and spend the night.

After checking in, we walked towards the CN Tower stopping along the way for lunch. Since it was rainy, we weren't feeling as adventurous as normal. We opted for The Friar where we could warm up and watch basketball until the rain slowed. If you like grilled cheese... this is your place. Finally, the game was over and the rain had slowed so we continued on our way to the CN Tower. Let me tell you a few things about this tower... it was the world's largest free standing structure for 32 years from 1975-2007. So for those of you who know me.. I am TERRIFIED of heights. The Eiffel Tower nearly did me in. And this is bigger! Also, in 1995, it was classified one of the "Seven Wonders of the Modern World" by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1995 (Cred: Wiki). So this was definitely something we had to do, panic attack inducing or not. If you aren't easily scared, like me, there is an option to partake in what they call the "Edge Walk" where you literally are on the outside walking around the edge of the tower. Feel free, but you'll be able to find me inside enjoying a glass of wine...

Despite it being a rainy day, the views were incredible. You can even walk across a glass floor and see Toronto below!

Upon exiting the tower, we decided to head towards a bar we had passed on our walk over called Sweet Jesus. Well, I think that's what it was called... anyway, we had craft beverages and then walked over towards Kensington Market. I wish we had made it here when it was open, but alas... savin' it for next time! By this point, it was dinner time and we were ready to sit for a bit. We found a place called Gabby's (ironically near where we had been when we had those craft beverages).

Once we had finished eating, we asked the server where he'd go if in Toronto for only one night. He suggested the Drake Hotel bar. This is a huge success. Highly recommend! Anyway, for those who know hubs, this story will absolutely make sense. And for those who don't... all I can say is... our lives are never dull. Hubs and Mark took a year a while back and traveled the 50 states. For the Massachusetts trip, they went to Boston and apparently ended up walking around late night with a fake Boston accent yelling as though they were from the movie "Departed." Well for some reason, as we are having a few drinks, the accent came back.  We were the stereotypical loud Americans, but it lead to a very interesting interaction with some nice Canadians. We spent some time discussing their work in radio and they graciously ended up buying us a few rounds of drinks before inviting us back to their apartment for more. I don't think we've ever been invited to a strangers place in a foreign country, but when in Canada, eh? So we walked across the street to the guy's apartment and hung out for a few hours. Mostly, we were just trying to convince them to come visit us in the ATL and why the south is amazing. Like I said, interesting night.

After a few drinks, we headed back to the hotel for the evening but not before Hubs brought back the accent in an attempt to fool our Uber driver... And as far as this adventure goes, that's all she wrote. We are planning a number of fun getaways throughout 2018, so it's ta ta for now...but not for too long...
Not the best quality, but this is us on the top part of the CN Tower looking over rainy Toronto!
